Australia’s Skilled Visa Income Thresholds to Rise from July 2025:
The Department of Home Affairs has recently announced important updates to Australia’s skilled visa income thresholds, effective from 1 July 2025. These changes reflect a 4.6% increase in the Average Weekly Ordinary Time Earnings (AWOTE) and are part of ongoing efforts to ensure fair wages for skilled visa holders, maintaining parity with the broader Australian workforce and preventing wage undercutting.
Key Changes to Income Thresholds:
From 1 July 2025, the following income thresholds will increase:
- Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT):
Rising from AUD 73,150 to AUD 76,515. This adjustment applies to the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa and the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). - Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT):
Increasing from AUD 135,000 to AUD 141,210. This update pertains to the Specialist Skills stream within the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa. - Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT):
Moving from AUD 73,150 to AUD 76,515. This change affects the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (subclass 494) visa and the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187).
What This Means for Employers and Visa Applicants
Existing visa holders or nominations submitted before 1 July 2025 are not impacted by these changes, allowing some transition time to adjust payroll and sponsorship arrangements.
Preparing for the Changes
If you are planning to apply for a skilled visa or sponsor an overseas worker, now is the time to review your salary offerings and contracts to align with the upcoming thresholds. Working closely with migration agents or legal experts can help ensure compliance and a smooth application process.
Conclusion
The increase in skilled visa income thresholds from July 2025 reflects Australia’s commitment to protecting the integrity of its workforce and ensuring fair pay for all workers. By aligning visa salary requirements with current wage trends, the Department of Home Affairs aims to maintain a competitive and fair labour market. Staying informed and prepared for these changes will be crucial for employers and applicants alike to navigate the skilled migration process successfully.
