Thailand Immigration Update: “e-Work Permit” Digital System Rolling Out

Ayutthaya, Thailand at Wat Chaiwatthanaram.

Overview

Thailand’s labour officials are implementing a major shift in the work authorization procedure for foreign nationals: a required online platform called the “e-Work Permit” system, through which all registrations and work-permit applications (covering new requests, renewals, and cancellations) will be submitted electronically

The updates are planned to start with the registration module on October 13, 2025, with complete compulsory implementation anticipated afterwards, though a temporary manual filing alternative will remain until a designated date.

Key Features of the New System
Here are the main aspects users and employers should be aware of:

  • Starting October 13, 2025, registration for foreign workers and applications for work permits will commence through the e-Work Permit online platform
  • The updated system aims to simplify workflows, minimize paperwork, and offer real-time monitoring of applications via the digital platform
  • Throughout the transition, because of system technical difficulties, the authorities will temporarily allow manual paper applications for work permits and cancellations until January 28, 2026
  • All authorizations through the digital system will lead to the generation of an Electronic Work Permit ID card for the foreign employee

Challenges & Considerations

While the digital move offers long-term benefits, stakeholders should note several transitional risks:

  • Technical glitches and delays - The work permit authority has already recognized problems with the implementation of the system
  • Uncertainty in processing times – It is still uncertain the duration of applications under the new system and how the approval procedures will be modified
  • Training and compliance obligations – Employers and authorized users are required to register on the platform and confirm their identity as essential steps
  • Dual-track filings during transition - The presence of both manual and digital methods may lead to confusion, varying practices, or accumulation of work

What This Means for Employers & Foreign Workers
Employers in Thailand, global mobility teams and foreign professionals should take proactive steps:

  • Register early on the e-Work Permit portal - Make sure your business, authorized individuals, and international employees are prepared prior to the complete mandatory deadline
  • Check internal workflows - Revise HR, immigration, and compliance protocols to accommodate digital submissions in place of paper documents
  • Ensure identity verification - Company directors or authorized submitters must undergo identity verification as mandated by the portal
  • Monitor application status closely - Anticipate potential delays during the rollout and make plans accordingly
  • Avoid travel risks until status is secure - Foreign workers should verify status changes under the new system to minimise risks associated with travel, renewals or cancellations

Key Takeaway

Thailand's transition to a compulsory online “e-Work Permit” system marks a significant advancement in the regulation of foreign workers, offering enhanced transparency, quicker processing, and digital ease. Nonetheless, entities and individuals need to get ready immediately for the shift. Individuals who synchronize their processes early, enroll, and adjust to the digital flow will reap the greatest rewards and reduce disruptions during the implementation phase.
